Hospitality isn't just my business. It's where I come from.

I'm Elena, founder of Empire Linen House. I spent four years working on cruise ships, and today I'm a cabin crew manager, responsible for the cabin, the crew and every passenger on board. Between the two, I've lived out of more hotel rooms than I can count. I know what a guest notices the moment they walk in, and the difference a well-made bed makes at the end of a long day.

This year I flew to Verona with my mum. We'd booked a place in the hills above Lake Garda. It didn't provide bedding, so I packed two sets of my own white linen. I'd just started the business, so it was a good chance to test them too.

On the flight I realised I'd forgotten my credit card and my driving licence. No hire car, no hills. We took the bus to the lake and booked a last-minute apartment in town instead.

We arrived tired after a very early flight. The bedding was faded, flowery and so thin it was nearly ripped. The towels were a grey-beige I hope wasn't their original colour. It might have been clean, but it didn't feel clean, and that's what a guest remembers.

So we used my sets. The moment the beds were changed, the whole apartment looked different. Same room, same furniture. Only the linen had changed.

Clean, crisp linen shouldn't be optional in any room someone pays to sleep in. It should be the standard.

My stepdad is Turkish and has spent his life doing business between Turkey and Europe. When I told him I wanted to build something of my own, he said: cotton never dies. Hotels will always need white linen. Today, everything I sell is made in Turkey from Turkish cotton, and I work directly with the manufacturer, with no middlemen in between.

Who I work with

Owner-led properties, mostly: Airbnb hosts, serviced accommodation, holiday lets, B&Bs and small hotels, across the UK. Rent-to-rent operators running several units who need the same set to arrive again in four months, not a "similar" one. People who choose the linen themselves and hear about it when a guest complains.

I'm based in Crowborough, East Sussex, and supply properties across mainland UK. If you're nearby, you're welcome to see and feel the linen before you order.

Empire Linen House is a young company, and I'm deliberately selective. A handful of properties looked after properly matters more to me than a long list of accounts nobody follows up. You'll deal with me directly, and I'll always tell you honestly what's in the fabric, what's in stock, and when something isn't right for you. I'd rather lose a sale than sell you the wrong thing.

Every order arrives with a little lavender and a handwritten note. It's a small thing, but small things are what guests remember, and I think hosts deserve them too.
